Vector graphics Wikipedia

Raster graphics are of a fixed dimension, somewhat like a grid pattern with specified values at each point. These graphics are the default for things from the real world (IE, scanned images, photographs, etc). They are ideal for use when an image will only be used once, and will never need to be enlarged, or if portions are coming from a photograph or other real-world image. Out of all the software available, Adobe Illustrator is the most popular, and its popularity has led it to become the industry standard. Some compression algorithms, such as RLE and LZW, are lossless, where the original pixel values can be perfectly regenerated from the compressed data. Other algorithms, such as JPEG, are lossy, because the parameterized patterns are only an approximation of the original pixel values, so the latter can only be estimated from the compressed data.

raster and vector graphics

Both raster and vector images have their own advantages and downfalls depending on the project at hand. Due to the abundance of pixels in a raster image, the file sizes can be substantial. An illustration with higher DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch) will be larger in size and data, which can be worrisome when there are limits to image storage or restrictions on uploaded file sizes.

Difference Between Raster and Vector Graphics

But having said that, there are reasons where using raster images may be the better solution. At some point, all vector graphics must be rasterized in order to be displayed on digital monitors. Vector images may also be displayed with analog CRT technology such as that used in some electronic test equipment, medical monitors, radar displays, laser shows and early video games. Plotters are printers that use vector data rather than pixel data to draw graphics.

  • Raster graphics have origins in television technology, with images constructed much like the pictures on a television screen.
  • In Illustrator, simply save as or export your vector graphic as a .JPG, .PNG, .GIF, etc.
  • As the graphics capability of personal computers improved in the 1990s, raster graphics became widely used.
  • Stack Exchange network consists of 183 Q&A communities including Stack Overflow, the largest, most trusted online community for developers to learn, share their knowledge, and build their careers.
  • The number of pixels in a display, called resolution, affects how much detail can be depicted in an image.

Humans won’t be able to notice pixels while you can see them by zooming in on a picture on the screen. Changing the size of a raster image is something shrinking or stretching the pixels themselves. Raster graphics are highly used for photographs, scanned artwork, or detailed graphics.

It is represented in the form of a rectangular grid of pixels which are viewable using a bitmapped display. However, when it comes to increasing or decreasing the size and resolution, it is a bit challenging. Compared raster and vector graphics difference to JPEG, PNG excels when the image has large, uniformly colored areas. In addition to straight image formats, Metafile formats are portable formats which can include both raster and vector information.

The number of bits stored in each pixel is known as the colour depth. The number of pixels in a display, called resolution, affects how much detail can be depicted in an image. Resolution is often expressed as the number of pixels in a column times the number of pixels in a row (for example, 800 × 600). Vector images are scalable, so one version of a design will always work for every iteration of a project. However, vector images cannot display photographs in a natural looking way, and vector formats are not as well supported online as are raster formats.

The German Social Democrats gained an absolute majority in 1962 and pursued progressive policies with the so-called Großer Hessenplan. The CDU gained a relative majority in the 1974 elections, but the Social Democrats continued to govern in a coalition with the FDP. Hesse was first governed by the CDU under Walter Wallmann during 1987–1991, replaced by a SPD-Greens coalition under Hans Eichel during 1991–1999. From 1999, Hesse was governed by the CDU under Roland Koch (retired 2010) and Volker Bouffier (incumbent as of 2020). Frankfurt during the 1960s to 1990s developed into one of the major cities of West Germany. As of 2016, 12% of the total population of Hesse lived in the city of Frankfurt.
